THE CHALLENGE
Sustainability has become one of the most important topics facing our planet. As a result, over the last few years, Sudima has taken action to transform the way they conducted business. Sustainability in the business world is essential to achieving growth and satisfying customers. By examining important practices around waste prevention, recycling, and neutralizing carbon emissions Sudima realised they could do their part to help save the planet and provide an enhanced guest experience.
Seeking to evoke and inspire “green thought” with their new development projects and adopt a sustainable culture in existing branches they needed to find the right hotel guest room supply specialist to help them on their journey. This was a challenge as many suppliers were not focused on implementing green best practices, nor did they have a strong interest in helping hoteliers reduce their environmental impact.
THE SOLUTION
To align with their sustainability goals Sudima was on the hunt for a new supply partner. They wanted a partner who would provide top quality service, had a personalised touch and shared the same Kiwi mindset around sustainability. Astro Hospitality, New Zealand’s most reputable mid-scale, upscale and luxury hotel guest room specialists, were leading the industry when it came to helping hotels on their sustainability journey. Working closely with Reuben Beatson, Astro’s Managing Director, Sudima quickly realised Astro’s products and services aligned perfectly with their business needs and goals.
How Sudima is paving a new way forward with Astro:
- Zero-Plastic
Reducing plastics is a companywide policy held by Sudima and is always taken into consideration when procuring products. Sudima was interested in purchasing Astro’s Six For Good Facial Tissues range but noticed there was a plastic seal on the inside of the tissue box. Being very Zero-Focused, Reuben and the team were able to find a way to remove the plastic without affecting the product performance. - Environmentally responsible
Astro is leading the industry when it comes to helping hotels stay up to date with the latest global trends. Looking to inspire designers and excite clients Astro created New Zealand’s first and only hotel specific showroom, Evoque Hotel Inspiration, based in Auckland. Within this unique space, 'The Cocoon’ displays only environmentally or socially responsible products.
During the planning of the Auckland City project, Sudima came across the JVD 12L Sky Bar mini-fridge in the Showroom. Designed for guest comfort the fridge is 100% silent, environmentally friendly, and consumes less energy than most minibars. It was the perfect fit! This product is the ‘go-to’ fridge and has been put into all of Sudima’s Auckland City Superior Rooms, and U-Rooms. Sudima’s U-Rooms are designed around the principles of self-care, well-being and sustainability.
Another item Sudima found during their visit to the Showroom was the JVD Marquise Kettle. With its compact design, at only 178mm high and only holding 600ml, the kettle reduces water and power consumption and still boiled 2-3 cups of water. This popular stainless steel kettle was also rolled out across the rooms.
